Twelve months ago this month, an ordinary day was interrupted by a serious situation in which a young woman was discovered seemingly intent on taking her own life on the Regent’s Canal by King’s Cross station.

The King’s Cross Estate’s security team, provided by Bidvest Noonan and led by shift manager Ali Chaaban, acted quickly to help prevent a tragic outcome. Team members Michael Omorodion was on hand to ensure the safety of someone who was in danger, while his colleague Dilnawaz Ali deployed his medical skills and liaised with the emergency services to ensure help arrived promptly. Another team member, Sarah Razaq was quick to arrange mental health support, working with the NHS to offer psychological help.

Results achieved

The team’s prompt support ensured the safety of the woman and also put in place the psychological help that would aid her recovery.

Lessons in best practice

Early intervention is essential: With someone’s life in danger, there was no time to lose. The team was quick to react, preventing a serious situation from becoming worse.

The importance of teamwork: A combination of the four people on shift were able to combine their different skill sets to ensure a positive outcome. The swift arrival of an NHS representative was also pivotal to saving the woman’s life.

The need for soft skills: This delicate situation required the quick deployment of softer skills by the security team, including communication, empathy and an understanding of the desperate situation the woman felt she was in.
